Turnaround Business Situations

CAI Principals have had extensive experience in turnaround business situations. We’ve seen that most often, current management, through myopia or complacency, has neglected to ask the right questions and keep them foremost in mind.

These key questions are:

  • Do we admit we are underperforming?
  • Are the business strategy and objectives aligned ?
  • What are the underlying causes of the underperformance?
  • How fixable are the root causes?
  • How has value been destroyed? How can it best be reestablished?
  • What time frame is realistic to achieve and what objective measures-metrics-will confirm the turnaround?

CAI invites your comments on this perspective. Do you agree? Disagree?

Testimonials & Endorsements

Knowledge + Experience = Satisfied Clients

  • Al reported to me as a division president at ITT and led his team to growth in revenue and profitability. He was recognized for this by receiving the ITT Chairman’s Award for Growth. He led his team by first developing a strategic vision, then executing a plan based on both organic product development and acquisitions. He was known for his collaborative leadership style and his ability to craft unique strategies, consistent with articulated  leadership Values, for his business segments. His emphasis on leadership development contributed to the promotion  of several managers to higher responsibility levels. These skills are the same ones needed in a strategic management consulting role and I strongly endorse Al for such client-centered assignments.

  • We have engaged Al on two occasions as a consultant for our research into the aerospace industry. His executive experience, insights and deep understanding of the sector were extremely helpful to us in our work.

  • Mr. Calabria’s deep experience as a senior executive and as a consultant positions him well for advising clients in lean manufacturing, sales and marketing processes, strategic planning and M&A. As a business unit President at Meggitt he had a major contribution in driving improvement in On-Time Delivery to our largest customer which has helped us to become the market leader for service. During this time, Al rebuilt the leadership team and grew profitability. His initiatives in pricing and channel strategy helped us grow revenues in the critical aftermarket. His service to Meggitt corporate wide supported Meggitt’s Transformation strategy, specifically as it related to the corporate Contracts function and the approval process for major bids and proposals. As a consultant to Meggitt, he served in an interim management role and seamlessly supported our operating units while we sought a permanent replacement. His consulting style is characterized by his sense of urgency, reliability, objectivity and collaboration with our leadership team. His skill set and consulting approach would be particularly helpful in evaluating business strategies and devising break-out initiatives for improved performance, especially in an M&A situation. I strongly endorse Al in advisory roles in any of the areas mentioned.

  • Al Calabria was a colleague of mine for several years and I was familiar with his background in strategy, lean manufacturing, sales & marketing and running manufacturing businesses.  As a consultant, he employs a results-oriented yet collaborative style that was particularly effective when he supported our SBU as an interim executive in the Contracts area.  He was involved in numerous customer meetings and always exhibited a can-do attitude in resolving conflict.  Our entire commercial team enjoyed Al’s involvement and appreciated the value he brought to their customer issues.  His strong sense of client service and responsiveness makes him a worthy candidate to advise any manufacturing company, not only aerospace and defense as he did for Meggitt.  I know with all confidence that Al’s future clients will be equally impressed with the level of dedication, expertise and professionalism he put into his work with us.
